Baby Body Labels

 

I. INTRODUCTION

People talk about health issues every day.  You, your family or your friends make doctors’ appointments, see the doctor, or talk to the doctor.  In this project, you will learn parts of the human body, some words to describe health problems, and how to talk about health problems.

II. TASK

In this project, you will do several things. You will work in class and on your computer at home. Here are the things that you will do.

  1. You will name parts of the human body.
  2. You will create a picture dictionary.
  3. You will alphabetize the body parts vocabulary.
  4. You will define the words pain, ache, hurt and injury.
  5. You will write down the definitions in your notebook.
  6. You to look up the definitions using Google search.
  7. You will say the definitions.
  8. You will learn to recognize and describe health problems.
  9. You will talk to a classmate about pain, ache, hurt and injury.
III. PROCESS

These are the steps you will use.

  1. Open Handout 1 and print the body parts worksheet.  Match the pictures with the words inside the circle.
  2. Cut the pictures and the words from the worksheet and create a picture dictionary.
  3. Alphabetize the words in your picture dictionary.
  4. Open Handout 2 and read the definitions of the words pain, ache, hurt and injury.   
    1. Copy the definitions on to your notebook.
  5. Go to https://www.google.com/#safe=active&q=define+pain  and click on the speaker button to listen to the pronunciation of the word pain. Say the word.
  6. Go to https://www.google.com/#safe=active&q=define+ache and click on the speaker button to listen to the pronunciation of the word ache. Say the word.
  7. Go to https://www.google.com/#safe=active&q=define+hurt and click on the speaker button to listen to the pronunciation of the word hurt. Say the word.
  8. Go to http://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/pronunciation/english/injury and click on the speaker button marked US to listen to the pronunciation of the word injury.  Say the word.
  9. Open Handout 3 and describe each health problem. 
  10. Then, talk to a classmate about the health problems you see in Handout 3 (Power Point presentation).

VII. TEACHER NOTES

This is a project for low intermediate ESL adult learners.

It is recommended that instructors review each part of this project with the students before having them work independently or with a partner.  This review gives instructors the opportunity to clarify any confusing steps and to answer any questions.  Show the students how to click on the links and how to use the handouts.
